Percolator coffee makers look much like a kettle. It functions just like one too but instead of boiling water, it is brewing coffee. The name alone will tell you how it basically functions.

It originated from the word "percolate" which basically means to passing through a substance that allows it to extract soluble. There are however, two kinds of this coffee brewer. You can choose from the one that uses gravity to instigate the brewing cycle or the one that uses pressure to push water to another chamber.

Some coffee enthusiasts do not really like the taste of the coffee it brews but if you use this properly and you make the right measurements, you can brew the best tasting cup of coffee.

Step 1: Remove the top lid. The first thing you can see is a metal plate. It also comes with a metal tube skewered through the metal plate. The bottom part is the brewing chamber.

Step 2: You can start by filling the chamber with water. It depends on your measurement but you can start with only two-thirds full of water. Remove the metal plate. But place the tube inside.

Step 3: Now you can add the coffee beans. It should be pre ground to a very coarse setting as you are not using filters here so the coarse coffee grounds cannot pass through when you are pouring a cup of coffee.

Step 4: The measurement will also depend on your coffee preferences but you can start with one half teaspoon of coarse ground coffee for every one cup of water. If you use two cups of water, then you will use one teaspoon of ground coffee.

Step 5: Put the metal plate back on again and then place the lid. Place the whole apparatus on your gas range and then turn it on. Let it boil for a few minutes. Just like a kettle, it will spew steam and bubbles. If you can see brown bubbles spewing, it is now ready. Just make sure that you keep a close watch to this device so it will not burn.

Some also pick the transparent ones or those with glass lids. This will help them keep a closer watch and to make sure that it will not burn. Once you have tweaked the right settings and the right measurements, you can brew the right coffee flavour you prefer.
